Friends For Life

For many, the main reason to join a fraternity is to meet people.  But joining a Greek organization is about much more.  You will do more than just “meet people.”  The word fraternity is derived from a Greek word meaning “brotherhood.”  Men in fraternities do not refer to each other as “friends,” they refer to each other as “brothers.”  There is a reason for this.  At Texas Tech you will meet tons of people.  There will be people in your classes, your residence hall, and other organizations you are in.  These people will be your friends, but the men in your fraternity will be your “Friends for Life.”

You will share a bond with the men in your fraternity that transcends friendship.  Because of your devotion to each other, your shared experiences, and similar experiences, you will have developed something special and unbreakable.  These will be the men who will be your groomsmen at your wedding and pallbearers at your funeral.

Going Greek will help you Experience…Friends for Life.

There are more men in American college fraternities now than at any other time in their existence, since Phi Beta Kappa was formed at the College of William and Mary in 1776.

Better Academics

One of the common misperceptions about fraternity life is that it adversely affects grades.  This is not true.  In fact, the opposite is true.  Most fraternity men achieve higher grades because of their involvement with their organization.  The competition between the fraternities for the grade plaque, pushes all members to seek their best for the good of the group.

Most fraternities uphold minimum GPA requirements for membership and initiation, which gives members a goal to strive towards.

How does a fraternity help your grades?

  • There are many ways.  Each fraternity has a unique scholarship program designed to meet your needs as a student.  Most fraternities enforce study hall requirements, requiring a certain number of hours per week of designated study time.

Probably the most beneficial component of the Greek grade system, is the fact that you have a built in network of peers to rely upon.  Members of your fraternity will probably have similar majors or have at least taken classes you are enrolled in.  Older members provide you with wisdom and advice on your current classes and recommend classes/professors for the future.

The Greek system rewards its members by recognizing the top students in each fraternity with the Greek-only honor society, Order of Omega.

Personal Development

Being in a Greek fraternity helps you in all aspects of your life.  Chapters provide programming, resources, tools, and aid that will help develop you in many different areas.

Besides the areas mentioned above such as leadership, scholarship, etc, fraternities provide you with resources to grow in these areas as well:

  • Physically – Fraternities participate in numerous physical activities.  The largest of these is intramural sports which includes teams in football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball, tennis, golf, swimming, and much more.  Fraternities compete against one another in competition for the “Blanket” given to the top athletic fraternity on campus.

  • Spiritually – The Greek system provides an outlet for your own personal spiritual growth.  Fraternities provide resources such as Chapter Churches , Weekly Devotionals, prayer requests, and more to aid you in your religious life.  All Fraternities and Sororities come together weekly for All Greek Bible Study held at rotating lodges.  It’s a time for praise and worship for members of the Greek community, lead by their fellow Greeks.

  • Maturity – Many people associate Greeks with immaturity, but in fact the opposite is true.  Greeks work to make themselves more mature.  Through holding each other accountable and believing in an organization larger than themselves, Greeks develop a sense of purpose and maturity that takes many a long time to discover.

  • Social Life – One of the main reasons associated with fraternities is to develop a social life.  Greeks have a lot of fun.  Through dinners, date parties, sorority mixers, open parties, brotherhood nights, and campus-wide events, fraternities provide you with the opportunity to develop your social side.

  • Alumni Support – When you graduate, fraternities provide you with a built-in network of alumni to help you with your job search.  Whether it is helping develop your resume, writing letters of recommendation, pointing you in the right direction, or directly hiring you for a position, alumni help their fellow alumni succeed in the real world.  Greek Life is not just about helping you be successful in college, but in life as well.

  • Member Education – Fraternities during pledgeship and membership seek to teach you skills for the real world.  Programs and seminars are held in fraternities lodges each semester to teach you personal skills such as dating and relationships, resume building, time management, just to name a few

Going Greek will help you Experience…Personal Growth.

Helping The Community

Nothing will give you greater personal satisfaction than the feeling of working together with your fraternity to better your community and your world.  Texas Tech fraternity members combined for thousands of community service hours and raised tens of thousands of dollars for charity during the 2004-2005 school year.

As a new member in a fraternity, you will learn to not only how and why it is important to give back to the community.  You will get to see firsthand how your efforts help people who are less fortunate or who are suffering.

Fraternity members over the past year have worked on important causes such as cancer research, campus and state beautification, and supporting local charities just to name a few.

Besides just helping the community, brothers seek to help one another as well.  When a brother is sick, going through hard times, or just needs support, in a fraternity he has a built-in support network there to back him up and vice-versa.  The hours of doing this are not measured and rarely recognized, but it helps make you a better person by caring for others.

In the light of community service, it’s hard to say that fraternity members are only concerned about themselves.  Whether through financial or manpower support, the Greek system helps make life easier for the residents of Lubbock and the world.  Going Greek will help you Experience…Serving Your Fellow Man.

Examples of just a few of the community service projects completed by current fraternities:

  • Blood Drives

  • Sorority Competitions (Go Cart Races, Trivia Competitions, Athletic Contests, etc)

  • Large and Small Venue Concerts

  • Arbor Day

  • Take a Kid to the Game
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Relay for Life

• 68 NIC member fraternities have over 5,300 chapters and 405 colonies at over 800 colleges and universities.
