General Policy Definitions

The purpose of the rush regulations governing men’s rush at Texas Tech University is to provide maximum opportunity for rushees to obtain an objective view of all the fraternities. It shall be the duty of the IFC Judicial Board and the Rush Director to insure a respect for this purpose.

A. Eligibility:

Any male who is interested in going through rush, formal or informal, must have been accepted to Texas Tech. He may not go through rush if he was accepted as a provisional student or is on academic probation. However, once he has completed at least 12 college credit hours at Texas Tech and has a cumulative G.P.A. at or over a 2.25 he may be allowed to go through rush. Any transfer student wanting to rush must have at least 12 college credit hours and a 2.5 transfer G.P.A. The Interfraternity Council reserves the right to ask for official transcripts from transfer students to verify G.P.A.

B. General Regulations:

1. All University regulations will apply during Formal Rush Week

2. All chapters are required to participate in Formal Rush Week activities.

3. The possession, use, sale and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages with the rushee(s) during the IFC Rush Period at any entertainment or function of any chapter and/or with any member of a chapter, or at any entertainment or function sponsored by any individual chapter member(s) shall be prohibited.

4. If a rushee is found in violation of the IFC rush regulations, including but not limited to the use of alcohol, missing rush parties without prior notice to the IFC Rush Chairman, or found committing criminal acts, he will be subject to the penalty of not being able to pledge any fraternity until the start of the next semester.

5. Chapter Rush Chairmen are responsible for having all necessary rush materials: detailed rush week schedule, rush regulations, and policies, etc.

6. All rushees are required to attend the IFC Orientation.

7. Official nametags will be assigned to each rushee when he formally registers for Rush.  All rushees must wear their nametags at all rush functions and activities. Each fraternity is responsible for enforcing the use of all nametags. A rushee will not be able to sign a bid card on Bid Day if he hasn’t signed a registration card and paid his rush fee.

8. A list of planned rush dates (location sheets) for periods A, B, C, and D including times and places, will be submitted to the IFC Rush Director in the previous semester on said date and time set by the Rush Director. Failure to register these period rush dates will result in review by the IFC Judicial Board.

9. Period A rush dates shall be confined to the fraternity premises. Any exceptions must be approved by the IFC Rush Director no later than said date and time.

10. Women are not allowed to be present at any Formal Rush Week activity.

11. Bid Day will be specified by the Rush Director. No further contact is to be made with the rushee until after Bid Day signing.

12. Fraternity members, with the exception of the chapter rush chairman and one representative of the chapter, are expected to stay clear of the site of rush date sign-ups. This is to minimize pressure on the rushees. Each fraternity must turn its bid list into Rush Central by said date. Also each fraternity must include instructions for its new pledges on where and when to meet. All fraternity members, with the exception of IFC. Executive Officers and Rush Committee, are expected to stay clear of the final signing on Bid Day. Again, this is to minimize pressure on the rushees.

13. Rushee registration fees will not be refunded if the rushee participates in any part of Formal Rush Week.

14. Dirty Rush. “DIRTY RUSH” is defined as any action detrimental to a fraternity, group of fraternities, or the Interfraternity Council. Specific examples include, but are not limited to the following:

a. “Bad-mouthing” another group, i.e., through implication, giving false information, etc.

b. Giving an oral bid, or handing a bid, prior to the IFC. time. Starting from the end of the last semester, to the next formal bid time.

C. Undue pressure on a rushee to join.

d. Pressuring a rushee to go suicide.

e. Coming into contact with a rushee in any way (person, phone, mail, or any other means) during IFC Formal Rush, exempting personal contact during official parties.

f. Violating any IFC rush regulation for the purpose of getting a rushee to join.

G. Any other act deemed by the IFC Judicial Board or Rush Director as “dirty rushing.”

15. All chapters are required to abide by these regulations and policies. Rush regulations and policies are subject to the interpretation of the IFC Rush Director and the IFC Judicial Board. Any complaints shall be directed to the IFC Rush Director or the vice-president for Judicial Affairs for the appropriate action to be taken.

C.  Any rushee who drops out of rush once it has begun will not be allowed to accept a bid for 90 days after the last day of rush.

There are more men in American college fraternities now than at any other time in their existence, since Phi Beta Kappa was formed at the College of William and Mary in 1776.

• Nearly four and one half million are members including more than 350,000 collegians on campuses throughout Canada and the United States.

• 68 NIC member fraternities have over 5,300 chapters and 405 colonies at over 800 colleges and universities.
